SFP transceivers have been used to show that legacy optical networks in
the metro-core-edge region of the network can be upgraded cost
effectively through optical-electrical-optical (OEO) wavelength

The dominant limiting factors affecting the performance of an amplified
CWDM data transmission system with an inline semiconductor optical amplifier
are investigated at different data rates and data formats. In this paper,
the effects of ASE beat noise and XGM on data transmission in an amplified
CWDM system is investigated. Also, the effects of SOA impairments on different
data rates and data formats such as OC-48, OC-12, Fiber channel and gigabit
Ethernet will be reported on and discussed.
