BTI Photonic Systems’ microWDM Solution deployed at Cogeco Cable to Support Delivery of Next Generation Services

Ottawa, Canada—Wednesday, June 13, 2007 // – BTI Photonic Systems, a global supplier of microWDM networking solutions for the build-out of new high-speed broadband networks, today announced that Cogeco Cable has implemented its technology to support the roll out of new high-bandwidth services in Quebec. Cogeco Cable, the second largest cable operator in Quebec, has upgraded its regional network linking Montreal, Trois Rivieres, Quebec City, and Chicoutimi to meet increasing demands for the delivery of video content and Gigabit Ethernet (GE) to its customers.

“We were looking for a solution to build-out our network that would meet the immediate needs of our customers, as well as our projected growth,” said Denis Bélanger, Vice President, Corporate Engineering and Development, Cogeco Cable. “Utilizing the BTI microWDM solution, we were able to upgrade our Quebec network seamlessly with no overhaul of our existing network infrastructure.”  BTI’s feature rich, easy to install solution allowed us to build out our network rapidly with minimal investment”.

Cogeco Cable deployed BTI’s 2060 platform allowing them to increase the Montreal - Quebec City -Chicoutimi corridor capacity up to 32 times.  BTI’s solution combined Wavelength Conversion, Optical Multiplexing, Amplification and Remote Management. The system’s unique capabilities enabled Cogeco Cable to meet its challenging distance requirements while eliminating the need for expensive regeneration sites.

The BTI’s 2060 platform is known for its wide range of integrated functions in the industry’s first microWDM 2U system.  Utilizing a common operating platform, an operator has the ability to multiplex DWDM wavelengths increasing the capacity on its fiber network, while at the same time utilizing BTI’s wavelength converters to connect existing platforms to colored wavelengths.  To meet the distance requirements of their regional infrastructure from Montreal to Quebec City and to Chicoutimi, Cogeco Cable utilized BTI’s integrated amplification and dispersion compensation capabilities to extend the reach of optical signals without regeneration.  For future growth, additional wavelengths can be added by simply inserting Small-Form Factor Pluggables (SFP) providing long term investment protection.

About BTI Photonic Systems

With a focus on making broadband telecommunications networks more flexible, easier to operate and profitable, BTI Photonic Systems has developed its WDM Netstender™ platform, the industry's first optical edge system designed to utilize photonic layer architecture. Netstender consolidates key transport capabilities (DWDM/CWDM, Optical Multiplexing, Amplification, Dispersion Compensation and Wavelength Translation) within a single network element delivering industry leading CAPEX and OPEX savings, high density and future-proof networking capabilities for metropolitan and regional applications. BTI’s Netstender addresses the issues of fiber relief, reach extension, 10G, 1G, and metro Ethernet service overlay enabling carriers to deliver new high-speed services while dramatically reducing their costs and increasing their overall market footprint.
